The Big Horn Galleries is extremely proud to represent the posthumous castings of Alexander Phimister Proctor. Mr. Proctor was born in 1860 and died in 1950 after leaving a legacy of some of America's most important sculpture. Born in Canada and raised in Colorado, Proctor was a product of the early West. He became an avid hunter with a knowledge of the animals and people of the region. In fact, hunting was his inspiration for the creation of many of his sculptures.
Although he was a naturalist who loved the outdoors, he was highly educated and comfortable in sophisticated art circles. He studied at the Art Students League and the National academy of Design in New York City and later in Paris.
Proctor created some of the most impressive monuments in the country, including heroes, wildlife, and western icons. His statues of General William T. Sherman, Robert E. Lee and Young Solider, the Q Street Buffalo in Washington D.C., are just a few examples of his enduring legacy of art.
Following a highly successful showing his work, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center will house the permanent collection of Alexander Phimister Proctor's work.
The Big Horn Galleries will offer several castings from the posthumous work of Mr. Proctor. Created under the direction of surviving family members, and utilizing Proctor's original plasters, new castings have been created of many of Proctor's fine sculpture. Illustrated on our website are many of the pieces that have been cast in very limited editions available for sale.
